AVP Kingston Seattle - HOT winners for another HOT AVP Beach Volleybal event

April Ross, the 2012 Olympic beach volleyball silver medalist and 2016 Rio Games hopeful, teamed with Jennifer Fopma on Sunday to win women’s bracket of the AVP Kingston Seattle Open.

Top-seeded Ross and Fopma beat third-seeded Summer Ross and Lane Carico, 21-18, 15-21, 15-13 in the women’s final. For April Ross, it was her ninth victory in the last 10 AVP tournaments. Eight of those came with three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, who hasn’t played since early July due to a shoulder injury but expects to return to the court later this month.

Ryan Doherty and John Mayer, seeded fourth, beat second-seeded Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena in the men’s final, 20-22, 21-17, 15-13. It was the first AVP tournament victory for Doherty, a 7-foot-1 former minor-league pitcher who won 13 games in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ system from 2005-07.

Doherty and Mayer beat the top three seeded teams in the men’s bracket en route to their first tournament victory as partners.

The tournament marked the first time the AVP had played an event in Seattle in 25 years.
