Norceca Beach Volleyball - El Salvador - Finals day
The women teams of United States, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Guatemala are the semi finalists of El Salvador Beach Volleyball Tournament, the second stop of 2010 NORCECA Circuit.
Puerto Rico goes against Cuba and United States faces Guatemala in Sunday’s semifinals starting at 11:30.
The first pair to qualify was United States Clair D’Amore/Jennifer Zinder with a 21-13, 21-16 victory over Cubans Niriam Sinal/Kirenia Ballar by score of 21-13, 21-16. Despite the loss, Sinal and Ballar made it to the semifinals through the losers’ bracket with a 21-17, 21-15 triumph over Dominicans Ginette Selmo and Gina Selmo.
Puerto Rico’s first ranked team of Yarleen Santiago/Dariam Acevedo qualified by scoring a dramatic victory over Guatemala (Maria José Orellana/Lourdes Ramírez) by score of 27-25, 21-18. Orellana and Ramírez completed the final four’s round with a sensational victory over the home team of Yvonne Soler/Laura Molina by score of 19-21, 21-13, 15-8.
In the match USA-Cuba, D’Amore and Zinder dominated the opening set since the first point. In the second, Sinal and Ballar recovered and close within one point but the Americans didn’t quit and ended with the win. In the match Cuba-Dominican Republic, the Selmo siblings started with big desire but ended losing against the better technique of the Sinal and Ballar.
The experience of Santiago/Acevedo prevailed against Orellana/Ramírez setting the stage for the great spectacle of the day against Salvadorians Soler/Molina.
The men’s pairs of Canada, Mexico, United States and Cuba advanced to the semifinals of El Salvador Beach Volleyball Tournament, the second stop of 2010 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit.
Sunday’s semifinales feature Canada against United States and Mexico against Cuba.
The Canadian pair of Martin Reader and Ray Sewell was the first to qualify with a 2-1 (21-17, 16-21, 15-9) victory over Jamaicans Mark Lewis and Dany Wilson, while Mexicans Aldo Miramontes and Juan Virgen dispatched Dominicans Yewddys Pérez and Germán Recio by score of 2-0 (21-18, 21-19).
The first set of Canada-Jamaica saw teams exchanging the lead with the better technique of Canada prevailing. The Canadians seemed to lose the concentration in the second set but dominated from start to finish in the decisive third. Meanwhile, the Mexicans had to battle to the limit to defeat the Dominicans.
Yewddys and German had another chance to make it to the semifinales but lost against the USA Team of Ty Loomis and Mattew Prosser by score of 21-16, 21-18. The last match of the quarterfinals in the double elimination competition was between Cuba (Farell Peña-Sergio González) and Jamaica (Lewis-Wilson). The Jamaicans couldn’t closet he first set after being ahead 20-17 and Cuba ended with a 22-20, 21-18 victory.
